I was at a photography workshop in Atlanta when a shooter entered an Orlando nightclub and killed 49 people. I rushed to the scene with nothing more than an iPhone and started gathering the story. My first few liveshots were transmitted using the Dejero app on my phone. Producers back at the station rolled some of my social media images to illustrate what I was talking about.
I then started gathering more emotional interviews and video using my iPhone. A few hours later I edited it into a simple package using the iMovie app.
My station, meanwhile, shipped my professional camera gear to Orlando. It arrived in the morning and I was able to produce more content for our broadcast and web platforms.
By day three, there were hundreds of reporters and photographers in Orlando and I was finding it quite difficult to produce a unique story. Solution - step away from the scene.
